While not all of you celebrate Valentine’s Day, some of you do, and chances are you’re over the stock standard crappy teddy bear and red roses. So, if you’re in Johannesburg over the Valentine’s weekend why not show your love and appreciation for your partner, first date or friends by checking out one of these awesome things to do in Joburg.
I’m pretty sure this is one of the most romantic restaurants in the city, in a laid back, homey kinda way. I’ll be spending my Valentine’s Day here with friends (Craig is ditching me for a gig in Cape Town) listening to live Jazz and enjoying a delicious four course menu which you can look at here. They will also be hosting their usual breakfast and lunch service if you’re looking for a daytime meal.
Book with La Vie en Rose here.
There’s nothing better than a good old Romcom…unless that Romcom is When Harry Met Sally and you’re watching it on Valentine’s Day at The Bioscope. The Bioscope needs no introduction, but if you haven’t left your house in the past few years it’s Joburg’s favourite independent cinema in the heart of Maboneng.
On the 14th The Bioscope will be showing: When Harry Met Sally, High Fidelity and True Romance. Book with The Bioscope here.
Row Boats at Zoolake
For the past year I’ve been pining after these boats. They honestly look like one of the most romantic and fun things I can think of to do on a summer’s afternoon. While the boats could do with a lick of paint, and you might have to deal with the smell of duck poo in the air until you’ve pushed off from shore, they are really fun and make for great photos.
You don’t have to book to go on the boats, but I do suggest parking in the lot near Moyo as it’snot a far walk from there.
Probably Joburg’s most famous Vegan restaurant, has made a name for itself not only because of its delicious food but its incredible decor and inside/outside setup. The Pudding Shop is only open during the day and it gets pretty busy from early on so be sure to book a table to ensure you get a spot…and a piece of one of their out of this world cakes. I took some pretty awesome pictures of the restaurant but somehow I managed to delete them, URGH! I promise it’s really beautiful, I’ll update the post when I get back to Joburg tomorrow.
Book with The Pudding Shop here.
They say the French do romance the best! So where better to spend your day than in one of Joburg’s understated and oh so ‘magnifique’ Arbour Café. While the Café won’t be open on Valentine’s Day itself it’s a great choice for those of you who want to beat the rush.
Book with Arbour Café here.
Joburg has the most beautiful sunsets, enjoying watching one, with your feet in a pool with a cocktail in hand makes them even better. I’ve been to the deck pretty often and I’ve never had a bad cocktail, once you’re done at the bar there’s also the option of grabbing a bite to heat at the hotel’s Italian/Japanese fusion restaurant Luce. Just a word of waring Luce is pretty pricey, even though the food is delicious if you’re looking for somewhere that won’t cost an arm and a leg this one it isn’t for you.
You can book with Island Bar here.
Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff (yes that’s the new official name) is incredible at the best of times, but this Valentine’s day they are offering guests and vistitors the chance to get their hands on a Chicnic basket. What’s a Chicnic you ask? Well it’s the chicest picnic ever of course. Once you’ve wrapped your head around the word you’ll be happy to hear that the Westcliff Deli is offering a choice of three different baskets for you to choose from and enjoy at any of their recommended picnic spots. Recommendations include the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and James & Ethel Gray Park.
The baskets will be available daily from February 13th.To order a chic-nic basket contact the reservations department 12 hours before you’re going to collect it. You can book your basket here.
