A few weeks ago Craig and I popped into the Whippet for a quick breakfast, I generally try stay away from ‘ready’ things because my stomach is so sensitive, on that particular day however I orders the French Toast. My meal was so delicious it really got me thinking: Where can I find the best French Toast in Johannesburg?
So after a month or so of eating lots and lots of French Toast I’ve found four of the best I’ve triads far. If you know of anymore that I should defiantly add to the list please pop me a mail I’d love to make it even harder for myself to fit into my jeans!
I was inspired by The Whippet so it’s only fair that I start with them. They have French Toast, with Banana and Chocolate IN it, like in…the…bread. If you don’t love their Nutella and Banana sandwiches dipped in cinnamon royale egg batter and garnished with a dollop of cream cheese and strawberries we can never be friends. The whippet as a whole is also really lovely to just sit in and people watch or work, I’m a fan of their fresh baked goods and their staff are really a cut above the rest.
Best Part: Amazing staff and chocolate IN the bread

I’ve been a fan of Knead since first discovering it in Cape Town and then again when it opened in Sandton. Knead is pretty much the only cafe in the whole of Sandton (that I know of) that makes delicious food, has great service and doesn’t cost you R500 just to look at their food. Knead makes an incredible fruity french toast that is the perfect balance between tasting good and feeling ike you’re not eating too badly. Knead also have a classic french toast with Nutella if you’re feeling like.
Best Part: Location and the fresh bread baked on site
Address: Shop L 08, Michelangelo Towers Mall, Upper Level, Opposite Nelson Mandela Square, Sandown, Sandton

Service Station used to be a regular for me in my Varsity years but for some reason I haven’t been there in ages, having recently rediscovered it Service Station simply had to be on my list. With it’s European feel and arty types sitting on their laptops or speaking loudly about their upcoming theatre performances, (this seriously happened the last three times I’ve been) the whole space has a really awesome feel to it. Service Station offers a variety of French Toast options but I decided to show off their traditional Bacon and Syrup version because nothing quite beats that sweet and savoury mix.
Best Part: Great ambience and location
Address: Bamboo Centre, Corner of 9th Street and Rustenberg Road, Melville, Johannesburg

Voodoo Lily has recently undergone a change in ownership and a bit of a facelift to the store. The cafe prides itself in sourcing most of its products and goodies in its Deli locally (some of it is from just down the road) so it’s defiantly worth checking out if you want to support local trade. While Voodoo Lily’s French Toast might not be the prettiest it’s seriously delicious and perfect for a Saturday morning breakfast watching the dog walkers on their way to the park.
Best Part: Great selection of local goods
Address: 64 St. Andrew Street, Corner Wrenrose Avenue, Birdhaven, Sandton 2196
