Pretoria, home of the Jacaranda, the Union Buildings and Kurt Darren is no longer the sleepy little brother to Cape Town and Johannesburg but has fast become a centre for expression, design and a vintage lovers paradise. It would be a mistake to say that Pretoria’s reemergence as a force in design and the arts lies on the backs of just three of its residents but it’s safe to say that Maitele Wawe, Thifhelimbilu Mudau and Sizophila Dlezi have definitely had a hand in it.
The group, better know as the Fashion Rebels are the brains the beauty and the brawn behind The Social Market. The market is hosted in different locations around Pretoria on the first Sunday of every month and while the hi-light of other markets might be gourmet burgers and craft beer this market is about one thing…fashion, and like the market it’s their fashion and energy that draws me toward them.
There has been a shift in fashion and creativity as a whole in in South Africa, it’s not about who is wearing the most expensive watch or if you’ve got the latest pair of branded sneakers but rather it’s about self expression and finding yourself in a crowd. Maitele and Co. don’t dress up to be noticed by others but rather to share their inner passion and journey with fashion. One day their outfits will be inspired by Africa the next by futuristic comic book characters, there are no constraints and there’s no stereotyping them even if you tried.
After spending only a few minutes shooting them and chatting away, I already felt inspired to create more and to explore Pretoria deeper than what’s seen at face value. I find it easy to get caught up in the creative process and forget that every once in a while you need to mix things up, at least now I have The Fashion Rebels just a short drive away to remind me.
