If you go down to today, you’re in for a big surprise…because their cocktails are strong, the tequila flows like water and if that wasn’t enough the food is damn good too. When I shoot restaurants for my blog it’s normally all business, I get in, take some pics try the food and get out. Our visit to The Royale ended up being a three hour stint, involving Long Island Ice Tea and a shot here and there.

Food and drinks at The Royale are inspired by Cuban flavours, their menu is divided between main meat, fish dishes, sides and dessert. It’s a simple menu but everything I tried on it was delicious and really well priced.  If you’re an omnivore there’s loads to eat and from what I’ve heard you won’t be disappointed! If you’re plant based the pickings are a little slim BUT the owner is developing a plant based offering with a Vegan chef so I can’t wait to see what they come up with. During the day The Royale is a restaurant by day but at night by the looks of things it turns into more of a bar as the night goes on, you’ll find a really awesome alley way/outside area that’s perfect for drinks with friends with the hot summer evenings we’ve been having.

We tried the Cheesy Bean and Rice (R55), sans cheese, they were probably my favourite thing on the menu I even tried to recreate it for dinner on the weekend. We also tried the Seasonal Veg (R60), it’s a really big serving and I’d definitely suggest it as a side with whatever you’re eating. Lastly, we tried the Cuban style Coleslaw (R35) it’s really refreshing and mayo free! For dessert they have a Waffle  (R55) with rum sauce that will make you want to chain yourself to your table and never leave, if you’re in the mood you can also get your paws on a freshly baked mini Banana Bread with Rum Custard (R55).

If you’re looking for a place to while away the summer holidays…or drink enough cocktails to convince yourself you’re not still working The Royale is for you! As with any new spot in Joburg is popular so be sure to book if you’re thinking of visiting at night or on the weekends.
