My first beer was a Black Label quartz that some ill advised bartender at Lusito Land sold to me and a few friends…classy I know. Since then I’ve always loved beer, it’s my drink of choice, especially now that there are so many great South African craft breweries popping up. You’ll find Urbanologi in the 1 Fox development and as if all my prayers have been answered it’s in a brewery called Mad Giant.
Normally you would pair hot dogs and chicken wings with a brewery, however serves gourmet street food filled with local flavours and international inspiration. Urbanologi’s menu is seasonal and head chef Jack Cotzee sources as many products as possible from Joburg and surrounds, in short it’s damn delicious and you should just head over there ASAP.
Part of the restaurant’s charm is the decor and open plan kitchen where you can watch the chefs working, it’s not like anything else I’ve ever seen in Joburg…or anywhere else I’ve been for that matter.
Urbanologi’s new Spring menu experiments with beer as an ingredient, so you can have your beer and eat it too. You’ll find everything from beer infused vinegar, caramel, syrup, Marmite and loads more. I really love how Jack has created such beautiful and complex flavours that are so easy to devour. There’s something for everyone on the Urbanology menu, it’s split between Raw, Fried, Steamed, Cured and Frozen and Kushiyaki (skewer), if you’re living ‘dat plant based life’ there are loads of options to choose from so don’t worry you won’t be left green eyed while your friends and family shove plate after plate down their gullets. is a firm believer in cutting back on red meat and introducing more veggies into his dishes, YAY!
We had what seemed like the whole menu when I visited but some firm favourites included the Teriyaki Poached Sweet Potato with Goats Yoghurt and Pilsner Honeycomb, it would be a sin to visit Urbanologi without trying this dish. I also really enjoyed the Heirloom Baby Carrots with Star Anise and Orange Blossom Labneh and Kumquat Marmalade. The Urbanology Spring Salad was also a table favourite.
Urbanologi can get pretty packed so be sure to make a booking, you can reserve a table online or call the number below.
