One of the best things about Joburg is that there’s always something new to discover even if you’ve been living here all your life! I recently discovered the Kwa Mai Mai Market only two minutes walk from Arts on Main.
The compound was once used as stables and developed into the market known today about 50 years ago. Each ‘stall’ plays host to a range of wild looking dried out plants, bones, herbs, animal parts and of course Sangomas, who for the most part are petty friendly and eager to answer any questions you might have.
Probably one of my favourite parts of the market were the izimbadada which are these flipping awesome traditional sandals that shoemakers have put a modern spin on by stitching well-known branding onto them. I really wanted to get a pair but I’m not sure I would know anyone who would wear them!
The market can be found at the and is open daily, there don’t seem to be any strict operating hours. It’s also worthwhile taking a walk around the surrounding buildings whose walls play host to some of the city’s most amazing street art and eclectic posters.
Also be sure to ask the shop owners if you may take pictures before snapping away as a few of them don’t like their wares or themselves being photographed.
I’ve been meaning to go there for ages! Have you been to the Farraday Muti Market up the road? Also worth checking out: http://2summers.net/2011/05/13/monkey-paws-anyone/
I havent yet also one I’ve been meaning to visit! Think I will give it a try this weekend!
I would wear ALL of those shoes!
